Gardening as a Future-Making Practice

Join the Garden Department when they share their knowledge around gardening practices at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie during the upcoming ELIA event. Organised by the ETHO Core Group, the session frames gardening as a future-making practice within higher arts education and beyond.

With the world irreversibly impacted by human actions, resulting in climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, there is a strong sense of urgency to adapt and to learn how to better collaborate with non-human life forms in order to protect and regenerate our shared environment. Gardening may seem modest in scale, yet it offers a radical, hands-on approach to reimagining production processes, material cycles, and educational infrastructures. Increasingly, art schools are integrating gardens into their technical ecosystems — not only as learning environments, but as places where materials are grown, tested, processed, and transformed.
